Hout Bay is a Mediterranean-climate coastal valley sheltered from the worst of the Cape southeaster but exposed to plenty of salt-laden wind in summer. The valley floor along Disa River and the lower Hangberg slopes runs to fynbos, milkwood, hydrangea and established stone-pine. Higher up — Scott Estate, Llandudno fringe, Tarragona — gardens face more wind, more rock, less topsoil, and need plant choices that can take it.
